This vessel is built on a modified-V hull with a relatively wide beam, a well flared bow, and balsa coring in the hull sides. Her well-appointed three stateroom layouts is similar, in most respects, to her predecessor, but with reduced dimensions.
Notable features of the Viking 50' include; a stand-up engine room with good outboard access to the motors, a huge in-deck fish box, relatively wide side deck, direct cockpit engine room access, and a superb bridge layout.
Accommodations: Three staterooms, two heads, galley and dinette up on one level.
It is reported that: The yacht left Pensacola Beach and while underway one engine lost power. There were no alarms; all instruments appeared normal. As owner throttled back, fire erupted from the side vents and the Halon Automatic Fire Suppression System went off. Both engines were stopped, and inspection revealed fuel in the bilge. The captain was able to restart one engine and return to the dock.
The fire appears to be a result of a leaking fuel line or fitting, which sprayed fuel on the port engine
inboard turbocharger to exhaust pipe connection. This gets very hot, and appears to be the point of originfor the fire. The source of the fuel is not known.
The overhead of the machinery space appears to be fiberglass, and the fire damage has blistered the gel coat and exposed the fiberglass laminates underneath. Soot covers most surfaces of the machinery space. The starboard engine air filter is melted; it is not known if the engine ingested metal as result.
The condition of the engines is not known. They have been partially disassembled for inspection and the parts are in storage along with the generator, which might have ingested Halon.
Wiring on the port engine is damaged, and there is a cooling unit on the starboard side of the
entryway into the engine room which has sustained melting of the wiring. Some of the hoses (unknown if they were oil, fuel, water hoses) were cracked from deterioration.
Excerpt from 2-22-17 surveyor report:
Repaint of essentially all surfaces of the engine space would probably be required.
• Most exposed metal connectors, wiring components, fasteners, etc. will all need to be either cleaned or replaced.
• The overhead of the engine space appears to have been fiberglass; much of the gel coat and top layer of the fiberglass was melted and burned.
• The generator was running at the time the fire took place.
• The engines were dismantled to see extent of damage. Of course there is potential for additional damages once complete dismantling is done.
